If movie props are such a sure thing….why are all these companies out of business?

http://www.movieprop.com/propdealers.htm

Under the above web address the following prop dealers are listed.

Let’s look at these people/companies since this list was published many years ago , which are still in business and if the others are still around.

Phone + 44 (0)1494 766 485
Email Contacts http://www.propstore.com/contact.php

Arguably the biggest prop and costume dealer in the world. So still here obviously.

* http://screenused.com/ dealer specializing primarily in Back to the Future and Terminator items. Has items from other productions for sale and a gallery of a collection of items not for sale. Email sales@screenused.com

Out of business. Rumors are the name has been sold to prop dealers who have not revealed themselves publicly. One of the owners moved back to Florida and has opened the new company, Icons of pop culture.

The owner still has a web presence but the site is out of date and rarely advertises items or sells on eBay to any great extent. All items are old stock including Starship Troopers which the company was most famous for selling in bulk circa 1998

Owned by the brother of the far superior prop dealer Marcia who in the 1990’s was one of the pioneers if not THE leader in selling props and wardrobe in the USA. Not to my knowledge currently selling.

www.bedlum.net broker of a large range of costume and wardrobe items based in Minnesota

Too many stories are told of this site and dealer. Au’revoir Bruce Hubbard.

http://propmasters.net/ UK based dealer of props and wardrobe TEL: 01892 725508

Still plodding away David has been a reliable chap that at one point was neck and neck with Propstore but stayed a one man operation. I admire that. Still the person who found one of the biggest catches of Indiana Jones items in the world outside the archive and thus will always have my respect for that alone. Like him I miss the old days.

http://www.rareprops.net/ UK base dealer of props and costumes with things from productions such as Gladiator and James Bond movies.

Gone. Some mentions on original prop blog but now defunct.

http://abacuscostumesandprops.com/ features a variety of mostly wardrobe items from productions such as V, and Babylon 5.

Backlot props was bought out by Abacus. Abacus sold most of it in a liquidation sale and promptly folded. Backlot got more out of Warner Bros. In the late 2000s than almost anyone including matrix, V and Babylon 5 so my hats off to David at Backlot for that. He was a nice guy and I wish he’d managed to continue into the next decade doing costumes.

Possibly Rick Spector? I don’t think The site works anymore but if it’s Ricks site one of the great pillars of collecting. A master of his craft. Particularly adept at old films and furniture.

www.moviebits.co.uk Uk based dealer of a variety of screen used movie and television items most of which are rather affordable. Other Dealer Sites

David Farthing. Have no experience buying from them but site still works. Low to medium type pieces on the site. Congratulations. You made it to 2020!

http://costumejunkie.com/ a collector selling a variety of authentic sci-fi oriented props, costumes, and replicas.

Edward Pugia. A quick web search finds many upset customers. Nuff said.

http://www.Moviepropking.com collector site with a for sale section of prop and costume pieces.

Jason is an intelligent, kind and well versed collector. Send me $50 mate. Lol. One of the good guys in collecting for much of my life doing the very same thing.

http://www.hollywoodhardware.de/eindex1.htm collector in Germany with some items for sale or trade.

Thomas. Similar to Jason a gentleman and very talented in all he sets his mind too. Great Terminator collection.

http://lucasfrancisstudios.com/LFS/sales/propsales.html features a few screen used items for sale.

Ousted most recently from Chronicle Collectibles where he was working producing great products….if your into replicas. Pug owner…huge plus. Makes animal ornaments. Hope he finds a new home making what he loves.

http://www.cinema-celebrities.com/ has a few wardrobe items for sale from time to time.

Who?

http://www.logantradingco.com/startrek.htm has a Star Trek Original Series hand phaser for sale acquired from Profiles in History originally as of March 2006.

Gone….and to be forgotten.

The Inquisitors glove from Red Dwarf

Although this has travelled to its new home I thought it would be nice to immortalize itself as having been part of my collection.

Originally made by the BBC visual fox department for the series 5 Red Dwarf Episode “Inquistor” this is one of three gloves made for the show and then sold in 2004 by Propstore as part of their Red Dwarf tv series sale from the shows producers.

The prop still had its light up functionality in the symbol area which when lit could change when the dual below it was turned. A light in the finger that was illuminated when “fired” sadly could not be made to light at this time.

Heavily used in the show this was a great piece and I know the new owner will love it as much as I.
