Whoah…..the ceiling was well and truly blown open with this one.
A group of components from a Stormtrooper costume from the original Star Wars trilogy fetched over £200,000 ($320,000) Wednesday at the Christie’spop culture auction in South Kensington, the house’s smaller London location. Though the suit is slightly damaged and has had some modifications made to it by the owner, it soared high above its pre-sale estimate of £8,000-12,000 ($12,600-15,700) to hammer down at £205,250 ($321,422) with buyer’s premium. The final sale total was £524,038 ($815,927).
According to Christie’s, the consignor received the costume in 1993 from a fellow member of his amateur dramatics society. That man had worked as a pyro-technician in the film industry and acquired the suit from another friend who had worked on the original Star Wars films. As for the imperfections, Christie’s noted, “Through the exuberance of youth and the excitement of wearing the costumes, some damage was innocently inflicted upon the components.” As proof of provenance, the owner provided photos of him playing dress-up in the suit in 1993 (unfortunately, those were not included in the catalogue).
